Back in the saddle again

Well, it’s been a little while since I’ve actually created – and I didn’t realize until I picked up the paintbrush again this week the impact it has. I’ve been feeling drained and uninspired for the last few weeks – work has been challenging and I’ve been travelling a lot and art has been put on the back burner.

I hit my studio last Sunday and tackled a painting I’ve been wanted to do for a while. My mermaid art journal page has been begging to become a painting to hang on my wall and she finally found her way to the canvas. The skin was really challenging on this piece, put I stuck to my guns and pulled out some unexpected materials and I was extremely happy with the final result. Here is the painting from its spray ink start to finish.

I also played in my art journal this week – it was all about texture and colour. I had no idea what direction I was going to go this week. I just decided to use up some scraps, play with a new stencil and use some of my favourite colours. I was a great way to get back into the groove and start to feel inspired again.

I'm an avid birder and naturalist, with the good fortune to work as a park interpreter. I get to spend every day in a beautiful park, so no matter how challenging, all I have to do is look out the window and the natural world is there to greet and soothe my soul.

  1. We met you last year at the Birding Festival in MacGregor Point. We were lucky enough to be able to have an art lesson and a wonderful birding/nature workshop with you. This week we are coming to Pelee Island and hope our paths might cross again.

Also hoping we might find some of your art to buy as a momento. I am not sure where you sell your art but will ask around and keep searching the Internet.

I often think of your wonderful talk and journal. I am a new artist and am inspired by you.

    1. Hello Stella,
It’s very nice to hear from you. I’m glad to hear you are visiting the Island soon and hope that you’ll be able to make a trip to the national park on the mainland as well, so you can stop by and say hi to me. There are a few places in the Leamington area that have my art for sale – Merlis’ Café in Kingsville, the Leamington Arts Centre, Point Pelee Trading Post (prints and one large original) and the Friends of Point Pelee gift store in the Visitor Centre at Point Pelee National Park (which has the best selection right now). If you do make it in to the park, please ask for me at the Visitor Centre, if I’m in, I’d love to pop out and say hi. Have a wonderful trip and I’m glad that I’ve inspired you – keep up the creative work!
